The scientific results were reported on October 4, 2010 at the Royal Institution in London--the most comprehensive inventory of known marine life ever compiled and cataloged it as a basis for future research—30 million records as of January 2011 and counting.

The SeaDataNet infrastructure links 40 national oceanographic data centres and marine data centres from 35 countries for all European seas. The data centres manage large sets of marine and ocean data, originating from their own institutes and from other parties in their country, in a variety of data management systems and configurations. A major objective and challenge in SeaDataNet is to provide an integrated and harmonised overview and access to these data resources, using a distributed network approach.

For convenience, sea-grasses are included, even though they are flowering plants--131,124 species and infraspecific names are in the database, 14,892 images, 48,191 bibliographic items, 206,518 distributional records

Joint venture of the Digital Library Project at the University of California, Berkeley with NatureServe, Declining Amphibian Populations Task Force, Fono Zoo & the Red List of Endangered Species. As of March 2012 the database contained 6,163 literature references, 513 sound files, 105 video files, and 24,265 photos of 3,671 different amphibian species.

NOTE: Other components of the website are contributed by students. These include thousands of species accounts about individual animal species with text, pictures of living animals, photographs & movies of specimens & recordings of sounds. The University does not guarantee the accuracy of these additional components.

Combines traditional sources such as primary and “grey” literature. In addition, data from various sources as Internet and e.g. from practising aquaculturists, even in developing countries, are considered to be valuable for the database.

Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act, NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service recovers protected marine species (i.e. whales, turtles) without unnecessarily impeding economic and recreational opportunities. With the help of the six regional offices and eight councils, NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service is able to work with communities on fishery management issues. In the U.S., where over half of us live along the coast and more than 78 percent of our overseas trade by volume comes and goes along our marine highways, the health of our coasts is intricately connected to the health of our nation's economy.

The headquarters of the National Weather Service is located in Silver Spring, MD with regional headquarters located in Kansas City, Mo.; Bohemia, N.Y.; Fort Worth, Texas; Salt Lake City, Utah; Anchorage, Alaska; and Honolulu, Hawaii. With some 5,000 employees in 122 weather forecast offices, 13 river forecast centers, 9 national centers, and other support offices around the country, NWS provides a national infrastructure to gather and process data worldwide. Each year, NWS collects some 76 billion observations and issues approximately 1.5 million forecasts and 50,000 warnings.

NOAA operates two types of satellite systems for the United States - geostationary satellites and polar-orbiting satellites. Geostationary satellites constantly monitor the Western Hemisphere from around 22,240 miles above the Earth, and polar-orbiting satellites circle the Earth and provide global information from 540 miles above the Earth.

Currently, we provide both real-time and retrospective analysis of remote sensing data and ocean model simulations in the Pacific Ocean. We are particularly interested in the U.S. West Coastal Ocean with focused areas around Southern California, Central and Northern California, and Prince William Sound in Alaska.
