Disability compensation is a monthly tax-free benefit paid to Veterans who are at least 10% disabled because of injuries or diseases that were incurred in or aggravated during active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training. A disability can apply to physical conditions, such as a chronic knee condition, as well as a mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Veterans disability benefits consist of monthly monetary payments to the veteran from the U.S. government. The payment amount is dependent upon the veteran's degree of disability (a higher degree of disability correlates to a higher monthly payment.) In addition to monthly payments, veterans disability benefits may include travel expenses for rehabilitation or treatment.

The Internal Revenue Service is committed to providing assistance to veterans and veterans with disabilities. It works with community and government partners to provide timely federal tax-related information to veterans about tax credits and benefits, free tax preparation, and asset-building opportunities available to them.
