For many years, ferries have played a vital role to residents and visitors of Eastern North Carolina. Ferry transportation began in the mid-1920's when Captain J.B.(Toby) Tillett established tug and barge service across Oregon Inlet along North Carolina's Outer Banks. Today, the N.C. Department of Transportation's Ferry Division extends over seven routes, has 21 ferries and employs over 400 workers. The operations are supported by a full service shipyard, dredge, tugs, barges, and other support vessels. Each year, North Carolina ferries transport over 1.1 million vehicles and more than 2.5 million passengers across five separate bodies of water - the Currituck and Pamlico sounds and the Cape Fear, Neuse and Pamlico rivers.

To pass the signs test, you must identify the traffic signs by color and shape and explain what each means. The written test is about road rules and safe driving practices. To pass the test, you are allowed to miss 3 of the 12 questions about road signs, and 5 of the 25 questions about road rules.

In 2001, the Southeastern North Carolina Passenger Rail Feasibility Study evaluated three possible routes for rail service to Wilmington and the southeastern part of the state. The study indicated strong interest in passenger train service along the Wilmington-Raleigh routes and recommended that the department conduct more analysis to help determine the best possible route. Study elements included: a station assessment, travel surveys, ridership and revenue forecasts, track capacity and signal improvements analysis, a rail improvement and port study, equipment and mechanical cost analysis and station conceptual designs. In 2005, the NCDOT released results of the Southeastern North Carolina Passenger Rail Study which reinforced earlier findings indicating interest in reinstating passenger train service to and from southeastern North Carolina. It also identified how track improvements would benefit freight rail service by adding capacity and reliability.

The Port of Wilmington is strategically located on the U.S. East Coast. Owned and operated by the North Carolina State Ports Authority, the Port of Wilmington offers terminal facilities serving container, bulk and breakbulk operations.
