New Hanover County Slave Deeds

Harriet began writing Incidents in 1853. When attempts to have the book published failed, she had it self-published in 1861. For nearly a century, the authorship of the book was questioned, but a new edition published in 1987 by Harvard University Press established Harriet Jacobs as the author. Since then, the book has become part of university curricula and has been translated into several languages.
